A Big Political Holiday Headache""May 1, Mexico's Labor Day" I like to recall when the U. S.A.'s "Labor Day" was spent with generally unencumbered contentment and family fun, most Americans glad for the day off of school and work, enjoying the weather and opportunity to let go. Isn't that what the American dream is all about? Live decently, work hard, and fairly reap the pleasant benefits of the "land of the free".
.So what's gone so drastically wrong?
Now Dad and Mom have to worry about taking that little trip to the lake with the kids because the too high cost of gasoline has already got them on the ropes, with their family-household budgets becoming increasingly strained and unmanageable. Big oil is reaping in huge profits, but we're told to accept that they're right on the money in their own rising costs per barrel and reinvestment necessities.
Partisan wrangling in an election year is in full attack mode; but where on God's Earth were the Democrats on the issue when they had more power? They love to spiel about how comparatively low the deficit and good the economy was during the Clinton years, conveniently leaving out the "Reagan, Gingrich and Gates" enormous influence and contributions that made it possible; not some mastermind political savvy that saved the "lucky-for-them" day. What, we should ask, would they do any better to ease the problem? Will they legislate increased drilling here at home? No.Will they do a better job of alternative fuel production? They didn't then; and now it's convenient, hard rhetoric.
After depleting the military and bombing the bejeebers out of Kosovo, the Democrat-party leaders are suddenly anti-war zealots, like the war-on-terror will evaporate on its own, with their demands for rushed withdrawals of troops and unrelenting calls for political, military leadership changes in midstream. They neglect to inform us that the rebuilding of the military and intelligence has been enormously expensive and painstaking after years of neglect; which was made all too clear by the Sept.11 attack by a few radical fundamentalists that basically enlightened us as to how weak we had become. Which country were they serving, anyway? Anyone that thought that we had no necessity for a strong military and intelligence capability back then, in the midst of several terrorist attacks on Americans and a "declaration of war" from Osama, must have been operating in "La-La Land".
Is it delusional to think that if there are low wage jobs that are unusually hard or undesirable that American citizens don't want, they should fairly, pay more, not less, thereby making up for the hard labor in a deserved, decent paycheck that pays the rent, puts food on the table, pays all the bills? Doesn't it figure that if that were the case, there wouldn't be so many cheap openings, and so much enthusiasm for those poor folks breaking the law and risking their lives to get here? Maybe instead they'd start to focus on how to improve the situation in their own countries; which seems largely more desirable for everyone concerned.
Many more Americans on the job with a decent salary, and less desperate, illegal immigration is not an unreasonable assumption, in all fairness. But does the Congress increase the minimum wage, or productively attain solutions from the business/employers that find it all too comfortable to pay little for what they call unimportant work? If it's so unimportant then why is it creating such chaos and disunity in the demand; and in the resistance amid all the trouble to change the status-quo?
Do they fear they'll go out of business if they have to pay a fair, deserved wage for undesirable work? Likewise the same kind of question could be put to the oil companies. Will they fail, do they fear they'll fail if they consider more, the really difficult plight of hard working Americans and their families and give them a break, and their profits are less?
Or is the "American dream" becoming nothing more than something to recall?
